Africa - Philanthropy
Philanthropy: (from Greek φιλανθρωπία) etymologically means "love of humanity" in the sense of caring, nourishing, developing and enhancing "what it is to be human" on both the benefactors' (by identifying and exercising their values in giving and volunteering) and beneficiaries' (by benefiting) parts.
I recently had an interview with a photography organization and was asked this question:
"Would you tell us something unusual about yourself that not a lot of people know about?"
Well, I have been to sub Saharan Africa 4 times (once for over 4 months) and have a very special heart and profound concern for the countless orphans there. For almost over 20 years, I have been involved in helping over 2,200 kids, a lot of them orphans, get basic education and thus, a better life. Although I do not have kids myself, many of the children in Africa call me dad! Especially the boy you see me holding here (first picture) who even considers his last name Metternich. Muwanguzi Daniel Metternich.
Sure photography is extremely important to me, but helping real people in real time is even more! I am trying to get Daniel through trade school if anyone is interested please drop me a line at MarkMetternich@gmail.com After Dan, I will continue to help as many children/orphans I can in Uganda, for the rest of my life! Although I do this work direct, and don't associate with only one organization, much of the work is done through the non profit Good Samaritan Ministries, Uganda so that donors/contributors can get a tax receipt for write off. There is 0%, and I mean 0% skimming of the funds this way. IMO, the key factor in working with any great organization is a lack of skimming of funds or lack of too much administrative costs. In other words, if you are interested in helping to support children and want to contribute, we will get the funds to the cause, 100%!
If interested, just email me.
